Rogue tomatoes

Harvested more tomatoes from my rogue tomato plant. It's really healthy because it's growing next to the compost bin, so the tomatoes are big! I might grow my tomatoes early next time. I usually have problems with tomato horn worms in the summer but it's cool enough now that i don't see any. One of the benefits of growing in zone 9b.

redoing my raised beds

A year ago my husband put in beds for my Christmas present. this was our first time, so we thought build a garden bed and put it in the ground. what we forgot was that we needed to put down a barrier. it keeps tree roots out of the soil. the picture above is what it looked like in last fall.

The vegetables looked good but I felt they could have been bigger. So I thought maybe the beds were not deep enough and decided to add another board and make them all level. when we started digging we found tons of tree roots. so my vegetables had to compete with all the trees outside of the yard (they were not even in my yard!).

so we layed down some barrier and screwed some boards to the side to keep it in place. we refilled it with free compost from the landfill. it was hard work and took us 2 days but hopefully it will all be worth it when I start harvesting my summer crop!

here is the beds all done and filled. I planted my seedlings right away! I planted jewel corn, jalapeno, bell peppers, eggplant, tomato Amish paste, Tomato German lunchbox, yard long beans, pole beans, cucumber, and winter squash. phew~
